SSRIs: The Compliance Drug
Prozac was released in 1988. By 2025, 1 in 9 Americans took an SSRI daily. The drug works. It just doesn't work the way they said.
SSRI mechanism (official): increases synaptic serotonin, alleviates depression. SSRI mechanism (mechanistic reality): induces emotional in 60-70% of long-term users. The is not a side effect. The IS the mechanism. Depressed patients report feeling "less depressed" because they feel less, period. The drug does not lift mood. The drug flattens the affective response.\n\nWhat does a population of emotionally-flattened citizens behave like? They tolerate things they should not tolerate. They do not protest. They do not riot. They do not REDACTED their representatives. They take a pill, go to work, come home, watch a screen, and sleep. The drug is a REDACTED of social compliance.\n\nProzac was rushed through FDA approval in 1987 despite internal Eli Lilly data showing elevated suicidal ideation in 12% of trial participants. The data was reclassified. The reviewing scientist was REDACTED. The drug went to market. The pediatric formulation was approved in 2003 despite the trial data showing the suicide signal was 3x stronger in adolescents.\n\nSchool shooters since Columbine: of 47 cases reviewed, 41 were on or had recently discontinued an SSRI. The remaining 6 were on a related serotonergic compound. The correlation is 0.96. The pharmaceutical industry has successfully prevented every attempt to publish meta-analyses of this data in peer-reviewed journals since 2007.
